About the race

Marsalforn wakes up long before the sun hits the water on race morning, with the Otters Club serving as the nerve center for the event. This local institution, deeply woven into the fabric of Gozitan swimming, transforms from a quiet club into a hive of activity where the scent of coffee mixes with the salt air. Swimmers gather here for the final briefing, surrounded by the same community members who have maintained these coastal traditions for decades. The atmosphere is grounded and focused, driven by a shared commitment to navigating these historic maritime corridors.

The water and the view

As you swim, the landscape offers a direct connection to the island's complex past. The course passes the Qolla l-Bajda Battery, an 18th-century fortification standing on the promontory of il-Ponta tat-Torri. This structure, which once guarded the coast against corsair incursions, remains a silent witness to the defensive strategies of the Knights of Saint John. Further along, the coastline is punctuated by traditional salt pans carved into the rock, where locals still harvest salt using techniques that have persisted for centuries. The sea here reflects the island's history; until the 16th century, this bay acted as the primary gateway for essential supplies from Sicily and passengers bound for continental ports like Licata.

Race day mechanics

Scheduled for August 30, 2026, the event offers distances ranging from 500m to 5km, catering to different endurance levels. All participants must use a safety buoy, and the use of wetsuits is prohibited across all distances, keeping the focus entirely on the athlete's raw performance in the Mediterranean. For those seeking a longer challenge in the region, the Oceanman Malta event takes place on October 3rd at Ghadira, presenting a distinct set of conditions for the end of the season. The logistical precision of the race, including the mandatory medical support and the single feeding point for longer distances, ensures that swimmers remain safe as they navigate the coastal waters. Above the valley, the concrete statue on Tas-Salvatur Hill watches over the bay, a landmark that has defined this stretch of the coast since the 17th century. The route also serves as a reminder of the more recent past, passing the sites targeted during the 1942 aerial bombardments, an event now marked by a dedicated memorial.

How to get there

Where to stay

Marsalforn offers a range of options, from traditional seafront apartments and family-run guesthouses to small boutique hotels near the harbor. Many accommodations are located within walking distance of the Otters Club, making them convenient for an early start. Prices for a double room typically range from 90 to 180 EUR per night during the late August season, depending on proximity to the water and amenities.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the race, Gozo is best explored through its rugged topography. Visitors often engage in coastal trekking along the cliffs leading to the Wied il-Għasri sea canyon, or explore the island’s interior through organized wine tastings featuring local grapes. For those looking to stay active, kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available in the bay, providing a different perspective of the limestone formations that characterize the Gozitan coastline.
