The Nile landscape

Participating in this event means swimming through the First Cataract, a series of ancient rocky rapids that once served as the southern boundary of the Egyptian world. The water here reflects a history of stone and science. Along the banks, you can observe the remnants of ancient granite quarries that provided the materials for obelisks throughout Egypt, including the massive Unfinished Obelisk lying nearby. Further into the current, the route passes the shores of Elephantine Island, an archaeological site that functioned as a strategic military outpost for centuries. The area is also linked to the legacy of Eratosthenes, who used the specific solar alignment at the local wells of Syene to calculate the circumference of the Earth.

Local environment and race conditions

As Aswan is one of the driest inhabited places on the planet, the climate is typically stable. However, rare and intense rainstorms can trigger flash floods in the desert landscape, which occasionally force scorpions toward the riverbanks; organisers maintain strict safety protocols to ensure the course remains clear. The river flow is managed through the Aswan Low Dam infrastructure, creating a controlled environment for the race distances, which are supported by water stations and safety buoys for all participants.

How to get there

Aswan International Airport (ASW) is 20km away. Aswan railway station is in the city center. For the race site: local taxis or Uber are the most efficient means of transport. Car rental is not recommended due to chaotic traffic; parking is limited at accommodation facilities along the Nile. Main travel is by land or via boats (feluccas).

Where to stay

Aswan provides a range of options, from historic colonial-era hotels along the riverfront to traditional Nubian guesthouses on the nearby islands. Boutique hotels with direct Nile access are common near the Corniche. Prices typically range from $60 to $250 per night, depending on the proximity to the water and the level of service. For a more immersive experience, many participants choose guesthouses on Elephantine Island, offering a quiet atmosphere and views of the river traffic.

Things to do nearby

The region is defined by its deep archaeological roots and river-based culture. Outside of race hours, visitors can take traditional felucca sailboats to navigate between the islands, or explore the granite quarries and the various temples dotting the riverbanks. Local markets in the city center offer a chance to experience regional commerce, while hiking trails on the west bank provide views of the desert meeting the river. Archaeological tours of the island ruins remain the primary activity for those visiting during the race weekend.
