About the race

The legend of Mahsuri, a local woman whose final breath cast a seven-generation shadow over this island, still permeates the atmosphere of Langkawi. As you prepare to enter the Andaman Sea at Hilton Burau Bay Beach, you are swimming in waters that have seen centuries of upheaval, from the desperation of the 1821 Siamese invasion—where villagers burned their own grain at Padang Matsirat to deny the enemy supplies—to the era when this was known as Pulau Lada, the pepper-trading outpost sought by 17th-century French merchants.

The giants in the horizon

While you sight your path, look toward the skyline for the towering profiles of Gunung Matcincang and Gunung Raya. Folklore tells that these heights were once giants engaged in a violent celestial brawl, their anger manifesting as thunder before they were frozen into the landscape you now navigate. This is a region historically defined by its strategic, often dangerous, position in the Strait of Malacca, where pirates once utilized the coastal inlets as staging grounds for raids on merchant junks, leading to intense clearance operations by the British military immediately after the second global conflict.

Race day logistics

The Aquaman event brings this history into the present with distances ranging from 500m to 10,000m, scheduled for July 25, 2026. The competition utilizes a beach start format, requiring swimmers to be self-sufficient as wetsuits are not permitted for most categories. The entry fees, which range from 30 to 149 USD, cover the operational complexities of managing open ocean safety, including the deployment of support vessels and the strict maritime coordination needed at this active coastal location. Every participant receives a race kit containing a timing chip, a swim cap, and a tattoo, ensuring that the logistical demands of these tropical waters are met with precision. Whether you are tackling the 10km endurance test or the 3x500m relay, the conditions demand respect for the sea's natural rhythms as you follow the course markers back to the sand.

Beyond the race, the island is defined by its natural and historical landscape. You can explore the mangrove forests via kayak, visit ancient archaeological sites that document the island’s maritime trade past, or engage in guided trekking trails that wind through the slopes of the giant-linked mountains. Local markets offer authentic culinary tastings, particularly focused on regional spices that reflect the island's historical identity as a pepper hub. These activities provide a way to experience the geography of the Andaman Sea from a different perspective.
