X-WATERS Belgrade 2026

May 17, 2027
Distances from 100m to 5km

About the race

The current tugs at your suit as you navigate the confluence, where the heavy, sediment-rich flow of the Danube meets the lighter, more agile Sava. Glancing up between strokes, the silhouette of the Kalemegdan dominates the horizon, a stone guardian that has witnessed 115 wars and seen the city razed 44 times. You are swimming through a history of sieges, passing the very waters where the 1456 clash turned the tide against the Ottoman advance, a victory still marked by the daily tolling of church bells globally. The water here is a living record of strategic power struggles, and as you find your rhythm, you might catch a glimpse of the Great War Island, an untouched green sanctuary that stands in stark contrast to the reinforced concrete banks where the city’s life pulsates.

A skyline of two worlds

As you progress along the course, the urban landscape shifts from ancient ramparts to the modern skyline of New Belgrade. You will pass the sleek, glass-clad West 65 Tower, which pierces the sky as a testament to the city's rapid contemporary growth. Further along the bank, the Savski kej comes into view, lined with the distinctive splavovi—floating restaurants that define the local leisure culture. The water here is consistently busy, shifting between open channels and the sheltered proximity of the forested Ada Međica, an island that once served as a literal border between warring empires. For those seeking to continue their journey through these historic currents, the event at Ada Međica offers a focused look at this island's unique ecology in late August. X-WATERS Belgrade organizes this gathering annually, offering distances from a 100m sprint to a 5km endurance test, inviting swimmers to experience this convergence point where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. While you swim, you might reflect on the legend of Jason and the Argonauts, who are said to have navigated these very rivers, or the ancient Vinča culture that thrived nearby, grounding your effort in thousands of years of human movement.

Where to stay

Belgrade offers diverse lodging options, ranging from historic boutique hotels located within the Stari Grad district to modern apartments in New Belgrade overlooking the riverbanks. For a more atmospheric stay, look for floating 'splavovi' converted into unique guesthouses or small family-run pensions near the confluence. Budget-friendly options start at €40 per night for private rooms, while premium boutique hotels in the city center typically range from €120 to €200 per night during the summer season.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, the city is best explored through its complex history and vibrant street culture. You can wander through the ancient ramparts of the fortress, visit the expansive Vračar plateau to see the Saint Sava Church, or explore the remnants of the Vinča culture at the local museums. For active afternoons, the riverbanks offer extensive cycling paths and opportunities for kayaking or SUP to get a closer view of the river islands. Evenings are best spent sampling local wines and traditional Balkan cuisine at the riverside taverns.
