About the race

X-WATERS Baikal 2026 takes place on July 19th in the Small Sea Strait of Lake Baikal, offering distances of 500 meters, 1852 meters, and 6000 meters. The event is hosted in Kurma Bay, a location defined by the dramatic topography of the Primorsky Range, which drops sharply into the water. Swimmers navigate these depths while observing the ruins of the Kurykan defensive wall along the coast of Olkhon Island, a stone sentinel that has overlooked the strait for centuries.

The water

Conditions in the Small Sea are heavily influenced by the Sarma wind, a powerful mountain breeze that funnels down from the valley of the Sarma River. With gusts occasionally exceeding 40 meters per second, the wind acts as a natural churn for the basin, keeping the water movement active and the environment unpredictable. In local tradition, this intense energy finds a symbolic match in the legend of Kurma, the tortoise avatar of Vishnu. Myth tells of Kurma resting beneath the ocean floor, his very breath regulating the movement of the tides. Whether viewed as a geological force or a mythological anchor, the presence of the "world-turtle" serves as a constant reminder of the fundamental forces of life and nature that participants encounter during their crossing.
