About the race

Long before the buoy lines were set at Alpine Lake, the rolling hills of Warren County were navigated by the Mississippian culture. These ancient inhabitants, who flourished starting in the ninth century, left behind a legacy of earthwork mounds that defined the Missouri landscape for generations. Today, that same terrain is known as 'The Westplex', a designation coined in 1991 to identify the western expansion of the St. Louis suburbs. As you prepare for the 11th annual Swim Across America event on August 29, 2026, you are tracing a path through a region where the history of human movement is etched into the very soil.

The water and the surroundings

Innsbrook itself draws its name and architectural spirit from Innsbruck, the capital of the Austrian Tyrol. The developers aimed to replicate the aesthetic of A-frame dwellings clustered around serene alpine waters, mirroring the stillness you will find during your swim. While navigating the 236-acre expanse of the lake—constructed in 2000 to anchor this private community—you might catch a glimpse of the architectural influence in the nearby village. The water conditions remain temperate, and because of this, wetsuits have not been required or permitted in previous years. Just as the nearby Skunk Creek winds its way down from an 800-foot elevation to join the Peruque Creek at 682 feet, your own path through the water is governed by the deliberate, calm design of the resort's centerpiece.

Race day logistics

This event is a significant gathering for the local swim community, often reaching capacity with nearly 600 participants. The morning follows a strict, efficient rhythm starting with check-in at 6:45 am, followed by a mandatory safety briefing at 8:20 am. For those who find the prospect of open water daunting, the organization offers 'angel swimmers'—experienced guides who accompany participants to provide encouragement and oversight. If you are looking for a different challenge in the same waters, you can find the earlier summer event held here in July. The fundraising commitment of $300 for adults ensures that every stroke contributes directly to the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Whether you are tackling the half-mile, one-mile, or two-mile distance, you are swimming in an area that has witnessed over 12,000 years of continuous human presence, now focused entirely on the pursuit of life-saving medical breakthroughs.

Where to stay

Innsbrook Resort functions as a private community, offering a variety of self-catered accommodations including chalets, luxury homes, and condominiums located directly on or near the resort grounds. These properties are managed through the resort's official vacation rental program. For those seeking traditional hotel options, properties are available in the neighboring towns of Wentzville and Warrenton, both situated approximately 20-25 minutes from the Alpine Lake venue. Expect standard mid-range pricing for regional hotels, while resort rentals vary significantly based on unit size and amenities.

Things to do nearby

The area surrounding the Westplex offers a mix of leisure and exploration. Visitors often spend the weekend exploring the rolling hills of Warren County through local hiking trails or by visiting the historic architecture in Wright City. For a more relaxed pace, the resort area is equipped for paddle sports, including kayaking and SUP on its numerous smaller lakes. The region is also situated within the broader Missouri wine country, providing access to local vineyards and tasting rooms that host events throughout the late summer season.
