About the race
Gliding through the water, you might notice the distinct silhouette of the neo-Gothic bell tower rising above the treeline of Belle Isle. This 98-foot landmark has watched over these waters since 1940, standing as a silent sentry for those tracing the path of the strait that links the upper Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Anishinaabe people, who knew these shores long before the city took its shape, called this region Waawiiyaataanong, meaning 'where the water curves around'—a name that perfectly describes the navigation through this urban island corridor.
The river's character
As you swim, the flow is defined by the unique geography of the river system which acts as a major international conduit for deep-draft freighters. Unlike the open expanse of larger basins, the water here is shaped by the shallow basin of Lake St. Clair, which averages only 11 feet in depth. This shallow nature dictates the temperament of the current, requiring swimmers to remain aware of the maintained shipping channels that cut through the lake floor. Just off the shore near the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, you are swimming in the presence of maritime history, as the institution houses the bow anchor of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a vessel that remains a central figure in the lore of the Great Lakes.
Race day logistics
Established in 2019, the Motor City Mile Open Water Swim serves as a charity event benefiting the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center. The event offers distances ranging from 0.25 to 2 miles, held annually in July at Belle Isle Beach. Participants are required to wear the official SAA swim cap provided at check-in, and while the water feels moderate by mid-summer, all swimmers should prepare for the specific logistical demands of a venue located within a state-managed park. The registration fees and fundraising minimums support early-career cancer investigators, with the event logistics—including the coordination of water safety and traffic patterns for the island—accounting for the structured entry requirements. With a two-hour cutoff time, the course encourages a steady, focused pace as you navigate the curves of the river.
