About the race
On March 6, 1775, Prince Hall and fourteen other men of African descent gathered on the shores of what was then a secluded island to be initiated as freemasons by a British Army Lodge. This historic act of courage unfolded on a piece of land that would eventually be tethered to the mainland through extensive land reclamation projects between 1890 and the 1920s. Today, the water at Castle Island remains a site of endurance, serving as the stage for the annual Boston Open Water Swim. Swimmers trace these historic coastal contours, navigating a path that once stood as a true offshore outpost while looking toward the horizon where the city skyline now dominates the view.
Navigating history and current waters
As you move through the course at Pleasure Bay, the landscape reveals layers of local lore beneath the surface. You are swimming in the shadow of the old fort where Captain Richard Davenport, a long-serving commander, was struck by lightning in 1665 during his watch. While you focus on your stroke, keep an eye out for the prominent landmarks that define the area, including the bronze statue of Admiral David Farragut standing guard in the nearby park and the dedicated monument to Donald McKay, the master builder of 19th-century clipper ships that once ruled the Atlantic trade. The proximity of these historical markers to the swimming lanes provides a tangible connection to the maritime heritage of South Boston.
Race day and event logistics
This event is part of a nationwide series that supports vital oncology research. Because the water conditions at this latitude require thermal protection, wetsuits are mandatory for all participants, a requirement that ensures safety during the August event. The race offers three distances—0.5, 1, and 2 miles—catering to various skill levels, with the addition of a 'Kids Splash' for younger participants. To maintain a secure environment, organizers provide support from experienced kayakers and 'angel swimmers' for those who may need additional confidence in the open water. Registration fees and fundraising minimums support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, turning every mile swum into direct financial support for cancer care.

Where to stay
South Boston offers a mix of urban hospitality and coastal charm. You will find boutique hotels located near the historic harbor area, providing easy access to the waterfront. For a more localized experience, visitors often look into short-term rentals in the classic triple-decker houses that define the neighborhood's architecture, or opt for hotels in the nearby Seaport District. Expect standard city rates ranging from $250 to $450 per night during the summer season, though booking well in advance is advised due to the high demand for coastal proximity.
Things to do nearby
The weekend of the swim allows for a deep dive into Boston's maritime and culinary scene. Beyond the race, you can explore the Harborwalk for scenic urban trekking or take a ferry to the Boston Harbor Islands for light hiking and historical tours of former defensive fortifications. The area surrounding Pleasure Bay is famous for its local seafood shacks and craft breweries, perfect for post-swim recovery. For those interested in deeper history, the nearby Freedom Trail remains the definitive way to experience the city's role in the American Revolution.
