About the race
Driving toward Imatra, the landscape shifts from dense boreal forests to the sudden, expansive glimmer of the Saimaa basin. As you approach the water's edge, the scale of the region becomes clear; this is the gateway where the vast lake system begins its transformation into the powerful current of the Vuoksi. The race day atmosphere centers on this transition, pulling swimmers from the deep, still basins of the lake into the narrow, high-velocity channels of the river. Participants in the longer distances begin their journey in the open waters of Saimaa, where the horizon stretches toward the nearby Russian border. Following the initial lake segment, the course demands a tactical transition, requiring a 1.2-kilometer foot trek before re-entering the river for the final, rapid-paced push toward the finish line.
Architectural landmarks and river currents
Navigating the Vuoksi, you pass structures that define the local skyline. The Church of the Three Crosses in Kaukopää, a concrete modernist achievement by Alvar Aalto, remains visible from the water, standing as a stark contrast to the surrounding pines. Further downstream, the Imatra Valtionhotelli appears as a granite fortress perched above the riverbank. This hotel, completed in 1903, was originally constructed to house the affluent travelers arriving by train from Saint Petersburg. The river itself is a bifurcation, a rare hydrological feature that splits and follows two paths toward Lake Ladoga, creating the consistent downstream flow that characterizes this event's faster segments.
History etched in the landscape
The riverbanks carry heavy historical weight. It was in the woods near Imatra that a high-stakes meeting between Marshal C.G.E. Mannerheim and Adolf Hitler occurred in 1942, a site chosen for its proximity to the Immola airfield and the relative isolation of the Karelian terrain. Beyond the wartime history, the river corridor once hosted the Imatra motorcycle Grand Prix, a street circuit infamous for its proximity to the railway lines and the water. Racing heritage remains part of the local identity, now observed by swimmers who pass the same curves that once challenged world-class riders. Whether you choose the 4000m sprint, the 8000m, or the 10000m distance, the experience is defined by the constant, muscular pull of the Vuoksi current as it carries you toward the finish.
