About the race

On the morning of the event, the shores of Lake Paranoá come alive with a rhythm unique to the capital. Swimmers gather before dawn at the water's edge, many returning for this annual challenge organized by the Instituto Evolução, which fosters a tight-knit community of athletes in the heart of Brazil. The atmosphere is quiet and focused, as the local swimming scene prepares to navigate the vast expanse of the reservoir, a stark contrast to the urban energy of Brasília just a few kilometers away.

The Water and the Horizon

As you begin your swim, the scale of this artificial landscape becomes apparent. The water is home to diverse species, including the jacaretinga, a native caiman that tends to stay in shallow, vegetated banks. While these reptiles are generally non-aggressive, they are a reminder of the lake’s ecological depth. You may also catch sight of otters or the neotropic cormorant, known locally as the biguá, diving near the surface. The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge dominates the view; its steel and concrete arches, completed in 2002, provide a distinct silhouette against the horizon that guides your path. For those looking for further challenges in the region, the 7th Copa Brasil AA takes place on the same waters in May, offering a different pacing for your season.

Navigating a Planned Capital

Swimming here feels like moving through a vision of the future. When Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin visited in 1961, he noted that the architecture made him feel as if he had landed on another planet. This extraterrestrial perspective is heightened when you glimpse the Three Powers Plaza from the water, home to the largest regularly flown flag in the world, a 90-kilogram standard hoisted since 1960. The history of the lake is also beneath you; the submerged village of Vila Amaury sits at the bottom, a relic of the 1959 damming that created the reservoir. You are swimming in the 'sea cove', as the Tupi etymology of Paranoá suggests, past ecological reserves like the Ilha dos Clubes. The race, which offers distances from 100m to 5000m, is supported by a 20 EUR entry fee covering the timing chip, cap, and event shirt. The event remains deeply connected to the prophecy of the patron saint Don Bosco, who dreamt of a prosperous city emerging between the 15th and 20th parallels south, a legacy that continues to shape the identity of these waters.
