About the race
The morning of the race, the banks of the Jardins de l'Europe hum with a specific kind of anticipation. Local swimmers from the Dauphins d'Annecy club, who have managed this event since its inception in 1931, greet familiar faces who return year after year for the spectacle. What began as a singular crossing has expanded into a complex logistical operation, involving over 200 volunteers to oversee the safety of nearly 2,000 participants. The event serves as a focal point for the town, with the finish line positioned strategically behind the City Hall, offering spectators an unobstructed view as swimmers emerge from the water to the backdrop of the Swan Island.
The glacial basin
Navigating these waters means crossing a landscape shaped during the Würm glaciation, when massive alpine ice sheets carved this deep basin. Beneath the surface, the water is fed by the Boubioz, a powerful spring that releases water from an opening at significant depth. Swimmers often notice the change in water clarity, a direct result of environmental protection policies implemented since the 1950s that pushed visibility from mere meters to over ten meters. Looking toward the eastern bank from the water, the jagged profile of the Dents de Lanfon dominates the skyline, serving as a constant navigational landmark for those tackling the longer distances.
Race day logistics
The event offers four distances, ranging from a 1,000m community swim to a 10km endurance test. Participation fees vary between 25 and 50 EUR, covering timing chips and swim caps. For the 10km category, organizers enforce a strict validation process; swimmers must submit proof of performance over 5km before the end of June to be cleared for the start line. This requirement ensures that those in the main pack can maintain a pace compatible with the local maritime traffic regulations. After the finish, the atmosphere shifts toward local tradition, where swimmers and their families gather for the Reblochonnade, a regional dish that requires advance booking during the initial registration process. Whether you are a competitive athlete or a local resident, the event remains an exercise in community coordination and respect for the alpine environment.

Where to stay
Annecy offers a range of stays from lakeside boutiques and historic apartments in the medieval old town to well-equipped campgrounds along the shoreline. Prices typically range from 120 EUR to 300 EUR per night during the peak of the August season. Early booking is recommended as the race coincides with mid-summer tourism.
Things to do nearby
Beyond the water, the region is defined by its alpine topography and history. Visitors often explore the limestone massifs through guided trekking, or rent kayaks and paddleboards to reach the less accessible coves of the lake. Local gastronomy is centered on mountain cheeses, with various producers offering tastings of Reblochon in nearby mountain chalets.
