The Whanga Swim
- Mar 13, 2027
- Distances from 100m to 3.8km
About the race
In March, the waters off the Whangamatā coastline typically sit in a comfortable range for open water racing, yet swimmers must respect the local tidal dynamics. The bay is influenced by the surrounding island geography, creating localized currents that require a strategic approach to your line, particularly during the 3.8km event. While the main beach provides a relatively sheltered start, the open ocean segments around the islands encounter more exposure to swells. You will need to account for these shifts in water movement to maintain a consistent stroke rate, especially when navigating the passages between the islands.
What you'll see
As you navigate the course, you are swimming through a landscape shaped by both ancient volcanic history and human activity. The name Whangamatā itself stems from the Māori words for 'bay' and 'hard stone', referencing the area's historical role as a source for obsidian (matā tūhua), which was once quarried here to forge essential cutting tools. During the longer swims, you will pass Hauturu, or Clark Island, a landmark often accessible by wading during low tide. The highlight for many is the circumnavigation of Whenuakura Island, frequently called 'Donut Island'. This unique landmass features a massive collapsed blowhole that forms a hidden interior lagoon, a rare geological feature visible from the water. Until recently, this island served as a sanctuary for the tuatara, a reptile species that has survived since the age of dinosaurs. On the landward side, the local marina, which opened in 2009 after a lengthy legal battle regarding the protection of the coastal surf break, serves as a modern marker of the town’s development. The event, organized by The Event Crew Ltd, utilizes this coastal environment to offer distances ranging from a 100m youth swim to the 3.8km endurance challenge, with registration fees reaching up to 145 NZD depending on the entry period and race category. Every participant receives an electronic timing chip and a silicone swim cap to ensure safety and accurate tracking throughout the morning.
