Spetses Mini Marathon Open Water Swim
- Oct 3, 2026
- Distances: 1.5km and 3km
About the race
Laskarina Bouboulina once commanded her fleet from the shores of Spetses, a naval leader whose legacy of defiance still colors the local waters. For the modern swimmer, these straits are less about historical maritime skirmishes and more about the challenge of open-water navigation between the mainland and the island. The Spetses Mini Marathon event, held annually in October, brings athletes to these same channels for a point-to-point crossing that leaves little room for hesitation.
The race day experience
The 3000m event starts at Kosta Beach on the mainland, requiring a boat transfer for all participants. Upon entering the water, swimmers face a direct path toward the finish at Poseidonion Beach. Because the route crosses a corridor of active maritime traffic, the organization coordinates closely with the Port Authority, deploying RIB boats and support kayaks to maintain a secure lane. For the 1500m distance, the course remains purely coastal, wrapping along the island’s edge to the same finish line. Wetsuits are strictly prohibited, keeping the focus entirely on raw swimming ability in the Aegean sea. Every athlete is provided with a timing chip, swim cap, and a commemorative kit; those tackling the 3000m are required to carry a safety buoy throughout the crossing.
Logistics and safety
Navigating these waters means paying attention to the support structure provided. One feed station is positioned in the water for the long-distance race, marked clearly by flags to guide swimmers. The 60-minute time limit for the 1500m and the 120-minute window for the 3000m are firm, designed to ensure the maritime lanes can reopen promptly. Personal bags are managed by the race committee, with secure transit from the start area to the finish line, provided they are clearly labeled with the participant's number. This logistical precision allows swimmers to focus on their stroke as they approach the landmark Poseidonion Hotel, which serves as the visual beacon for the final stretch of the race.

Where to stay
Spetses offers a variety of lodgings, ranging from traditional guesthouses housed in restored stone-built residences to boutique hotels located near the Dapia port. Many properties are situated within walking distance of the Poseidonion finish area. During the race weekend, expect to pay between €120 and €250 per night depending on the proximity to the waterfront and the level of service.
Things to do nearby
Beyond the water, the island is best explored by trekking the pine-forested paths that circle its perimeter or by renting a kayak to reach secluded coves. History enthusiasts often visit the local museums dedicated to the island's revolutionary past. For those looking to enjoy the local harvest, early autumn is an excellent time for tastings of local olive oil and traditional island meze at the waterfront tavernas.
