SNL Experience 2026

Oct 4, 2026
Distances from 1.5km to 5.8km

About the race

In 575 BC, Greek sailors navigated the western Mediterranean, eventually establishing the colony of Empúries on these shores. Those early settlers recognized the strategic importance of the rugged coastline, a landscape now dominated by the limestone cliffs of the Montgrí Massif. Today, this legacy of maritime exploration continues with the SNL Experience, a season-closing gathering held on October 3rd and 4th, 2026. The event serves as the grand finale of the SwimNoLimits Cup, transforming Cala Montgó into a hub for the open-water community. Swimmers follow in the wake of ancient mariners, observing the same craggy coves that once provided shelter from the winds. As you round the coastal markers, look toward the horizon to spot the Medes Islands archipelago; their marine reserve status ensures a biodiversity that remains largely unchanged since those first ships arrived.

Technical waters and historic landmarks

The 5.8 km circuit is the most demanding of the three distances, stretching towards L'Estartit and incorporating technical segments between rocky outcrops. Navigating this route, you will pass near the site where the Loran-C transmitter once operated—a mid-20th-century navigational marvel that superseded traditional coastal landmarks. The proximity of the Ter river mouth significantly influences the seabed, contributing to the fine, soft sand of the local beaches. While pushing through the water, you might notice the coastal dunes of La Pletera in the south, a rare, protected wetland system that anchors this shoreline. Those seeking a shorter challenge can opt for the 1.5 km or 3.4 km routes, which remain within the more protected waters of the bay. Similar regional events, such as the MARNATON eDreams Begur by Zoggs held in June or the 55ª Travessia Illes Medes-Estartit in late June, offer different perspectives on the Costa Brava, but the SNL Experience remains the definitive end-of-season test for those looking to close their calendar with a technical coastal swim.

Where to stay

The event is centered at the wecamp Cala Montgó, which offers a mix of modern glamping and bungalow-style lodging. This setup is ideal for those who prefer to remain within the race hub, offering direct access to the beach and the event's social activities. Prices typically range from €100 to €180 per night depending on the unit size and seasonal demand. Nearby, the town of L'Estartit provides a broader range of options, including family-run guesthouses and boutique hotels overlooking the harbor, generally ranging from €80 to €200 per night.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, the region offers deep cultural exploration. You can visit the nearby ruins of Empúries to walk through the ancient Greek and Roman city remains. For active recovery, the coastline is perfect for sea kayaking or SUP tours, allowing you to enter the hidden caves of the Montgrí coast that are inaccessible by boat. Culinary enthusiasts should prioritize local wine tastings from the Empordà region, often paired with fresh seafood caught by the local fishing fleet in the nearby port of L'Estartit.
