About the race

The Qiantang River crossing event is a major annual gathering in Hangzhou, taking place at the 'City Balcony' area. The race has become so popular that it requires an online lottery selection system to manage the high demand for participation.

The 2025 edition confirms the success of the format introduced the previous year, including a category dedicated to families (parent-child) and a 'Water Carnival' area with interactive installations, such as the 'Misty Forest' and the 'Capybara Paradise', as well as booths dedicated to Hangzhou's intangible cultural heritage.

Where to stay

Hangzhou offers a diverse range of lodging, from high-rise international chains in the Qianjiang New Town business district to traditional boutique guesthouses near the historic West Lake area. Expect to pay between $80 and $250 per night depending on proximity to the riverfront. The Binjiang district provides modern, convenient access to the race start, while the older city center offers a more traditional atmosphere close to the ancient canal sites.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, visitors can explore the UNESCO-listed West Lake through guided walking tours of the historic Su Causeway or visit the local tea plantations to experience the origin of Longjing green tea. Kayaking and SUP are available in the calmer sections of the lake for those looking to maintain their water rhythm, while the Southern Song Imperial Street provides an immersive look at the city's architectural evolution and archeological preservation efforts.
