Perhentian Island Challenge
- Oct 10, 2026
- Distance: 16km
About the race
The water surrounding the Perhentian Islands is defined by a deep, oceanic blue that transitions into shallow, neon-turquoise corridors as you navigate the coral reefs. For a swimmer, this sea is not merely a surface but a living history of the South China Sea. During the colonial era, these waters were known as 'The Station Islands', a name derived from the Malay term 'Perhentian', which marks this archipelago as a vital shelter for merchant vessels traveling between Bangkok and the Malay Peninsula. As you pull through the chop, you are tracing the same corridors once used by trade ships seeking refuge from monsoon winds.
Navigating the Marine Park
The 16km circumnavigation of Pulau Besar requires you to respect a strictly protected marine zone. Gazetted as a marine park in 1994, the area maintains a two-nautical-mile prohibition on all fishing, which has resulted in an unusually high density of marine life. It is common to spot green and hawksbill sea turtles near the reef line, as the islands host a vital nesting ground managed by the Department of Fisheries. In the deeper sections of the course, particularly near the coral formations, you may encounter black-tipped sharks, cuttlefish, and schools of clownfish. The anti-clockwise route forces you to manage your energy against the open-sea conditions of the eastern side before finding the shelter of the bays.
A legacy of passage
This race is a modern iteration of the island's long history as a point of transit. Beyond the historical trade routes, these shores were a critical landing point during the 1970s for Vietnamese refugees, adding a layer of human endurance to the landscape. Today, the event logistics reflect the logistical challenges of such a remote location; the 315 EUR entry fee covers the mandatory one-to-one support boat, which is essential given the 16km distance and the unpredictable nature of the open sea. With a start at Teluk Pauh Beach and a strict 7-hour and 30-minute cut-off, the race demands consistent pacing. Participants are rewarded with a finisher medal, specific polo and event shirts, and a post-race ceremony at the Perhentian Island Resort, situated right on the beach where the journey begins and ends.

Things to do nearby
Post-race, the focus shifts to the water itself. Beyond the swimming, the archipelago is a global hub for snorkeling and scuba diving, with accessible reef sites teeming with coral biodiversity. Visitors can also arrange jungle trekking along the interior trails to spot monitor lizards or take a sea-kayak tour to reach secluded coves inaccessible by larger boats. Local dining revolves around fresh catches from the mainland and traditional Terengganu-style rice dishes served at small harbor stalls.
