About the race

Beyond the breaking waves of the Pacific, the water at Noosa Main Beach reveals a distinct personality defined by its orientation and the protective curve of the coastline. Swimmers often describe the sensation of gliding through a sheltered basin, where the swell from the open ocean is largely tempered, creating a rhythmic and predictable flow that suits both seasoned marathoners and those testing the water for the first time. The seabed consists of fine, light-colored sand that enhances the clarity of the water, allowing for clear visibility of the depth changes as you move away from the shoreline toward the boundary of the Noosa National Park. This particular stretch of the Queensland coast acts as a natural catchment, maintaining a steady, inviting temperature throughout the late summer season.

Race day and course logistics

February brings a specific energy to the region, as the 13th annual event draws a massive influx of participants to the sand. The program is built around flexibility, offering everything from the 300m Junior Giants event for younger swimmers to the full 5km marathon distance for those aiming to push their personal endurance limits. The 2km out-and-back route remains the most popular choice, providing a direct engagement with the coastline, while the 5km event utilizes a multi-lap format to keep the field contained within the safer, protected zones of the bay. In 2026, the introduction of the Knockout Sprint Relay adds a high-intensity dynamic, mirroring the format of international championships with back-to-back heats that reward speed and recovery capability. Competition is open, with cash prizes reserved for the top three finishers in the 5km distance, while other categories earn product-based recognition. Coordination of such a large field requires strict adherence to wave starts and buoy navigation, so a careful review of the event maps is essential before entering the water.
