Macquarie Bondi to Bronte Ocean Swim

Nov 8, 2026
Distances from 250m to 5km
25th edition

About the race

The Bondi Surf Life Saving Club members are already on the sand long before the sun clears the horizon, setting up the buoys that mark the path for the 25th anniversary of this event. For decades, the local community has gathered here on race morning to share the water that defines their daily life. The name 'Bondi' itself carries the history of this place, derived from the Dharawal language to describe the sound of waves crashing against the rocks or the rhythmic thud of fighting sticks. Swimmers navigating the course step into a history shaped by the Bidjigal, Birrabirragal, and Gadigal people, who have occupied this coastline for tens of thousands of years.

Navigating the currents

As you push off from the beach, the water holds memories of the 1938 'Black Sunday'. On that February day, a massive sandbank shift pulled hundreds of bathers into the ocean, resulting in the largest rescue effort in the history of the club. Modern swimmers now navigate these same waters with the watchful eyes of the surf lifesavers. You will likely encounter the 'Backpackers' Rip' near the southern end, a current that appears deceptively calm but demands respect for its power. While you swim, glance toward the northern end to see the headland of Ben Buckler Point, which guards the bay and marks the start of the dramatic sea cliffs heading north. The route also passes sections of the underwater shark nets designed to mitigate marine encounters, a reminder of the raw environment in which this event takes place.

Race logistics

This annual event offers a variety of distances, from the 250m junior swim to the 5km endurance challenge, each designed to test different levels of experience. The 2026 edition, scheduled for November 8th, shifts from the traditional December date to accommodate the anniversary calendar. Whether you choose the 2.4km point-to-point journey or the shorter 1km loop within the bay, you are following a path that many locals swim daily. During the migration season, it is not uncommon for participants to spot dolphins or pods of whales in the distance. For those looking for further challenges in the area, the Bondi2Coogee 5km Swim provides an opportunity to explore the adjacent coastline, while the Manly to Bundeena 36km caters to ultra-distance swimmers. The race concludes with the standard prize presentation, where the community celebrates both the top finishers and the spirit of those who finish their first open water event.
