About the race

Descending from the winding turns of the C-31 coastal road, the Mediterranean reveals itself as a stark contrast against the rugged limestone of the Garraf Massif. As you arrive in Sitges, the sight of the water from the road prepares you for the conditions that define the LXXIII Travessia Sitges. This annual event, organized by the Club Natació Sitges, utilizes the local coastline where the geological backbone of the cliffs meets the sea. Swimmers participating in the 2200-meter event, as well as the shorter 800-meter and 200-meter distances, often use the asymmetrical silhouette of the 17th-century Church of San Bartolomé and Santa Tecla as a primary visual reference while navigating the bay.

Historical currents and coastal landmarks

While moving along the shore, you are essentially swimming through a timeline of local migration. Many of the stately homes lining the promenade were built by 'Americanos'—locals who returned from Cuba in the 19th and early 20th centuries, bringing back the Caribbean custom of planting palm trees in their gardens. This architectural influence is best viewed from the water as you pass the Maricel Palace, a structure that encapsulates the town's artistic transition. Further along the coast, the landscape shifts toward the more secluded Playa del Muerto, a site known for its difficulty of access by land, making the water-based perspective of this swim particularly unique. Athletes looking for a different pacing in these waters might consider the Marnaton eDreams Sitges, which takes place in May, months before the August date of this event.

From coffee to local culture

Even the concept of the modern beach bar has roots here. In 1913, the first establishment of its kind, 'El Kiosket', appeared on the local sand; it was later dubbed 'chiringuito' by journalist César González Ruano, who drew a linguistic parallel to the Cuban method of filtering coffee through a stocking called a 'chiringo'. Near these shores, the history of the region extends even further back, as evidenced by the discovery of Neanderthal remains in the nearby Cova del Gegant. The race logistics are managed directly by the club, ensuring that the event remains a fixture for those who frequent the Mediterranean. Whether passing the inverted triangle monument dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community or navigating the open water, the swim remains a direct interaction with the maritime character of the Garraf coast.

Where to stay

Sitges offers a dense selection of lodging, ranging from historic boutique hotels housed in former 'Americano' mansions to modern apartments near the promenade. For a more rugged experience, there are several well-equipped campsites nestled in the foothills of the Garraf Massif just outside the town center. Expect to pay between €120 and €250 per night for a mid-range hotel during the August season, though prices fluctuate significantly based on proximity to the beachfront.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, visitors often explore the local Malvasia wine cellars, a heritage dating back to Mediterranean trade links with Monemvasía. The Garraf Massif provides extensive trail networks for trekking, while the coastal caves, such as the site of La Cova del Gegant, offer a glimpse into the area's prehistoric human occupation. Kayaking along the cliffs is a popular way to reach hidden coves inaccessible by road, often followed by local seafood tastings in the historic center.
