About the race

On 7 May 1846, a sudden landslide buried the Ngāti Tūwharetoa village of Te Rapa, claiming 60 lives including the chief Mananui Te Heuheu Tūkino II. This somber event serves as a reminder of the raw geological forces that shaped Lake Taupō, a vast caldera created by the massive Oruanui eruption 25,600 years ago. Today, swimmers traverse these same waters during an annual event organized by the Lake Taupo Rotary, navigating a landscape defined by both its violent past and its present-day serenity.

What you'll see

As you glide through the 4.2km course from Acacia Bay to Three Mile Bay, the lake bed beneath you holds the secrets of its volcanic origin. Near the Mine Bay cliffs, you will pass the 10-metre-high Māori rock carvings depicting the navigator Ngātoro-i-rangi, created in the late 1970s to symbolically shield the caldera from further activity. Further along, the water column conceals the Horomatangi Reefs, formed by lava dome extrusions; these areas remain geologically active, with hydrothermal vents supporting extremophile micro-organisms that differ sharply from the standard lake ecosystem. You may also spot brown and rainbow trout, species introduced to these waters in the late 19th century, darting through the depths.

Race day logistics

Geological shifts continue to alter the environment, such as the 170-metre shoreline collapse at Wharewaka Point following a 2022 earthquake. This instability is why the event relies on careful coordination, ensuring that participants navigate safe, established routes. The 4.2km crossing is the primary challenge, though shorter 1km and 2km distances are available for those seeking a less intense experience. For athletes looking to maintain their summer momentum, this February gathering provides a distinct alternative to the earlier The Epic Swim – Taupo, held in January. Whether you are a regular in these waters or a first-time visitor, the swim remains a direct engagement with the caldera's floor, offering an experience defined by the immense scale of the surrounding volcanic basin.

Where to stay

Taupō offers a mix of lakeside holiday parks, motor inns, and boutique lodges. Visitors often choose between self-contained units near the town center or lakeside cottages at Acacia Bay. During the summer, prices typically range from $150 to $450 per night depending on proximity to the water and service level. Advanced booking is recommended for race weekend as availability tightens due to the high volume of summer visitors.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, the region is shaped by geothermal energy and indigenous history. Visitors often explore the Huka Falls trails, visit the Orakei Korako geothermal site, or take guided kayak tours to the rock carvings from a different perspective. For those seeking cultural depth, local museums provide insight into the Ngāti Tūwharetoa history, while the surrounding hills offer extensive mountain biking and hiking tracks that overlook the caldera.
