About the race

Swimming through the Stockholm archipelago requires a keen awareness of the Husaröleden, a primary maritime artery where commercial vessels frequently pass. The water here is influenced by the proximity to open Baltic channels, creating a dynamic environment where the direction of the current can shift depending on wind patterns and regional weather systems. Swimmers should anticipate variable surface conditions, as the open stretches between islands offer little shelter from the prevailing breezes. Navigating these waters is a reminder of the historical skill required by local seafarers who once managed these complex routes.

Historical passage and nature

As you progress, the landscape reveals the legacy of the region's maritime history. Near the shoreline, you may spot the Sundströmska lotsgården, the former residence of Reinhold Sundström, who served as the island's final master pilot. His work was essential for safe passage through these treacherous, rock-strewn corridors. Further along the course, the route passes near the Själbottna-Östra Lagnö nature reserve, where the coastline transitions into smooth, flat rocks at Brännholmen, a stark contrast to the deeper channels of the Baltic Sea. Just a mile to the northeast, the Hallonstenarna nature reserve offers a glimpse of the dense, protected coniferous forests that define this rugged island terrain.

Race day and navigation

Organized by the Solna Sundbyberg Simsällskap 04, the annual Husarö Runt event is scheduled for August 1, 2026. The course takes participants through varied depths and narrow passages, including the vicinity of the Klintsundet swing bridge, which has connected Östra Lagnö to the mainland since 1964. Swimmers should remain mindful of the area's geography, as the proximity to the Sikmarö canal—a 1,650-meter passage measuring roughly 10 meters wide—highlights the confined nature of some segments of the archipelago. Registration for the upcoming edition is currently open, with reduced rates available for swimmers under the age of 25 through a collaboration with the Stockholm Swimming Federation. The event relies on the island’s unique topography to create a challenging circumnavigation, keeping competitors close to the natural and man-made landmarks that have shaped life on Husarö for centuries.

How to get there

Where to stay

Accommodations on Husarö center on the traditional character of the archipelago, ranging from renovated historical fishermen's cabins to seasonal guesthouses. Camping options are available near the island's sheltered beaches, providing direct access to the water for early-morning warm-ups. Prices typically fluctuate between €80 and €180 per night, depending on the proximity to the harbor and the level of amenities offered. For those seeking a quieter environment, private guesthouses located further inland offer a more secluded experience amidst the forest.

Things to do nearby

The weekend of the race offers opportunities to explore the island's maritime heritage, including visits to the pilot museum to learn about local navigation history. Active participants can rent kayaks or SUPs to navigate the smaller, shallower channels that are inaccessible to larger boats. For land-based activities, the nature reserves feature well-marked trails through mixed forests, leading to granite cliffs that provide panoramic views of the archipelago. Local small-scale food producers also offer tastings of seasonal island goods, highlighting the agricultural side of the region.
