About the race

The morning of the event, the area near the Budapest University of Technology and Economics transforms into a staging ground for the local swimming community. Participants arrive early to collect their timing chips, often sharing stories of past crossings while watching the water flow steadily past the university quay. Organized by the Maratonman Generali team, this 500-meter crossing is a practical test of navigating the main artery of the city, requiring entrants to present a medical certificate to ensure they are fit for the current. The logistics are precise: swimmers are shuttled to the MAHART pier, entering from a mobile pontoon in controlled 15-second intervals to maintain safety and spacing within the river.

The water and its remnants

As you enter the Danube, you are crossing a path that has dictated the city's growth for centuries. Below the surface, the riverbed holds traces of Contra-Aquincum, the Roman fortress that once anchored the Pannonian Limes on the east bank to oversee all river traffic. The currents here are tempered by the city's infrastructure, but the feeling of being in a channel that has seen everything from trade ships to the dark legends of the Huns remains palpable. Local tales, often recounted by those who have lived by the river for generations, mention the burial of Bleda, brother of Attila, whose final resting place is whispered to be somewhere in these depths.

Views from the center

Throughout the swim, the architectural scale of Budapest frames your progress. You will pass beneath the Petőfi Bridge, a 1930s structure that links the modern academic districts, while further upstream, the silhouette of the Buda Castle stands as a reminder of the royal seat established in 1361. Along the riverfront, the monument to Sławik and Antall serves as a quiet witness to the human actions that defined the city during the 20th century. While the swim itself is a short 500-meter sprint, it places you directly into the flow of the river that feeds the famous geothermal spas of the capital. The race concludes at the BME center, where the finisher medal awaits, marking the end of your time in one of Europe’s most storied channels.
