About the race
Driving along the winding coastal road towards Gaeta, the Tyrrhenian Sea reveals itself in sudden, expansive flashes between the limestone cliffs. As you approach the promontory, the silhouette of Monte Orlando commands the horizon, shifting from a distant landmark to a towering presence that dictates the local geography. Pulling into the town, the morning air carries the crisp salinity characteristic of the Tyrrhenian coastline, setting the tone for a weekend centered on the water. You find yourself in a place where the urban fabric is deeply intertwined with maritime history, with the narrow streets of the old town leading directly to the water’s edge.
The underwater horizon
Swimming here means navigating an aquatic museum. Beneath your stroke, the Gulf of Gaeta holds the remains of elaborate Roman maritime villas, where the elite once retreated to escape the politics of the capital. As you push through the water, you might catch the shadow of the Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus, a cylindrical structure standing 168 meters above sea level on the peak of the promontory, serving as a silent, ancient guide for your navigation. The coastline is equally dramatic at sea level; the Grotta del Turco cuts deep into the cliffside, where incoming swells generate rhythmic, hollow echoes and shifting light patterns that transform the water’s color from deep cobalt to vibrant turquoise.
Historical echoes
Returning to the harbor, the skyline is anchored by the Gaeta Cathedral bell tower. Completed in 1279, this 57-meter structure blends Romanesque and Arab-Norman styles, yet its foundation tells a more visceral story of the sea. Embedded in its base are marble slabs salvaged from older tombs, while 13th-century reliefs depict the biblical Jonah being consumed and later expelled by a sea serpent—a permanent reminder of the unpredictable power of these waters. This connection to the sea is functional as well as symbolic, evidenced by the floor of the 10th-century church of San Giovanni a Mare, which is intentionally tilted to allow tides to drain naturally during seasonal floods. The event features distances of 926m, 1852m, 3000m, and 7000m, challenging participants to maintain their pace while surrounded by this dense layering of history and geological drama.
