Défi Eau Libre

Legend speaks of the Maroons, who sought sanctuary in the rugged heights of Le Morne Brabant during the early 19th century to escape the brutality of enslavement. In 1835, faced with the arrival of a police expedition, a group of these fugitives chose to leap from the summit into the ocean below, an act that transformed the mountain into an enduring symbol of resistance. Today, the basaltic monolith of Le Morne, rising 556 metres above the shoreline, guards the horizon, its dramatic caves and steep, verdant slopes looming over swimmers as they prepare for the Défi Eau Libre.

The waters of the lagoon

As you enter the Lagune du Morne for the 1500m or 3000m challenge, the water reveals its own story. The lagoon is protected by a reef that acts as a natural buffer, creating a specific micro-climate that dictates the character of your swim. To the west, the coastline offers an optical illusion that is famous worldwide: the appearance of an underwater waterfall, caused by sand deposits being pulled into the depths off the peninsula's edge. While you navigate your loops, you are swimming in a UNESCO World Heritage site, a protected landscape that shelters rare endemic flora like the Mandrinette and the Boucle d'Oreille. The peninsula itself derives its name from the Dutch East India Company vessel, the *Brabant*, which met its fate here on 29 December 1783, running aground on the very reefs that now define the sheltered environment of your race.

Race day mechanics

Launched in 2020 as a symbolic 'breaking of the lockdown', the event has matured into a core feature of the Casseconfi Festival. The swimming format is built around 750m loops, requiring an Australian exit after each circuit. This means you will physically emerge from the water and cross a timing mat before diving back in, a tactical shift that breaks the rhythm of the long-distance effort. The event accommodates both the 1500m and 3000m distances, with the option for experienced swimmers to enter both. Registration includes your race bib, and the event operates under the technical oversight of the Mauritius Swimming Federation. Because the lagoon is shallow, your navigation is straightforward, though the transition between loops demands quick adjustment to the changing light as you turn back toward the monolith.
