Cyprus Swim Series Pissouri 3rd Edition

In the 7th century, a group of 300 Alamanoi saints arrived on these shores under the shroud of a pitch-dark night, seeking the isolation of the Cypriot coast to practice their asceticism. Today, the same waters that once offered refuge to those pilgrims provide the stage for the third edition of the Cyprus Swim Series in Pissouri. While the modern swimmer encounters a far more welcoming environment than the early hermits, the coastline remains deeply tethered to its past; the very name of the village finds its roots in 'pissa', the resin once harvested from local pines to sustain the economy through the Byzantine and Frankish eras.

Navigating the coast

As you traverse the course, particularly during the 8km marathon starting at Prolimnos Beach, the landscape reveals markers of both myth and modern utility. To the west, the silhouette of Petra tou Romiou looms large as the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite. While the site is a cultural landmark, the surrounding waters are notorious for rough, unpredictable conditions, a stark reminder of the sea's volatility which typically forces race organizers to steer clear of the immediate base of the sea stack. Further along the route, the view shifts to the coastal village of Paramali, which is partially partitioned by the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, a zone frequently utilized for military training exercises.

Race day logistics

Scheduled for November 13–15, 2026, the event offers a range of distances from a 500m sprint to the 8km endurance challenge. The logistics, including bus transport for the long-distance participants to the start line at Prolimnos, are streamlined to manage the coastal geography effectively. Swimmers will notice the 1883 Church of Apostle Andrea standing guard over the coastline, its stones originally hauled from distant villages by donkey carts, providing a fixed point of reference against the blue horizon. With over 200 athletes expected, the event focuses on a secure, organized progression through these historic waters, ensuring that participants can focus on their stroke while moving through the same channels that have shaped the island's maritime identity for centuries.
