Chillswim Ullswater 7.5 Miles End to End

Jul 10, 2027
Distance: 12.1km
7th edition

About the race

In 1962, the final shift concluded at the Greenside Mine, a site that once dominated the skyline above Glenridding and powered the local economy by extracting 156,000 long tons of lead alongside 45 tonnes of silver. Today, the industrial echoes of that era have long since faded, leaving behind a tranquil landscape where the primary activity is the quiet movement of swimmers through the cold, deep waters of the lake. The Chillswim Ullswater End-to-End follows this historic vein, guiding participants on a 12.07-kilometre journey from the village of Glenridding to the northern banks at Parkfoot.

Glacial scale and poetic waters

As you begin your stroke, you are traversing a massive, 63-metre deep glacial trough. The scale of Ullswater is daunting yet mesmerizing, stretching approximately 11 kilometres with a narrow profile that keeps the steep, imposing fells within constant view. These same shores were once the playground of a young William Wordsworth, who famously recounted his youthful, illicit fishing expeditions from a stolen boat in his autobiographical work, 'The Prelude'. While you navigate under the shadow of the surrounding peaks, you might glimpse the occasional red squirrel in the canopy of Glencoyne Wood or pass the dense, protected juniper populations clinging to the scree slopes of Birk Fell. The environment remains a pristine, albeit challenging, corridor for long-distance endurance.

Race day logistics and structure

Scheduled for July 11, 2026, this event requires a consistent, sustained effort, with a mandatory cut-off pace of 65 minutes per mile. The 190 EUR entry fee covers the complex logistics of a point-to-point swim, including shuttle transport for participants, six boat-based feed stations stocked with energy drinks and jelly sweets, and comprehensive water safety support. The field is split into wetsuit and non-wetsuit categories, acknowledging the varied thermal preferences of the swimming community. This route is an essential destination for those seeking the full length of the lake, though swimmers looking for a different seasonal challenge often consider the BLDSA Ullswater 2026 championship, which takes place just a few weeks later in August. Whether you are navigating the glassy morning surface or contending with the occasional breeze funnelled by the fells, the swim remains a raw, unobstructed immersion in one of England's most significant glacial legacies.

Where to stay

The area around Glenridding and Pooley Bridge offers a range of stays, from traditional camping at the event-adjacent Parkfoot Holiday Park to local guesthouses and boutique inns. During the July peak season, expect to pay between 120 and 220 EUR per night for double occupancy in well-regarded local hotels, while basic holiday park pitches or camping pods are significantly more affordable. Early booking is advised as the village serves as a primary hub for mountain walkers and outdoor enthusiasts year-round.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the water, the region is defined by its verticality and maritime heritage. You can explore the remnants of the lead mining era through local heritage trails or head to the shores for guided kayak and SUP sessions to better understand the lake's currents. For those with energy remaining after the swim, the ascent of Helvellyn provides a panoramic perspective of the entire route you have just completed, while the lower valleys offer quiet spots for sampling regional ales after a day of trekking the surrounding fells.
