About the race

The drive into Pinawa reveals a sudden shift from the flat prairie landscape into the rugged terrain of the Boreal Shield ecozone. As you approach the river, the horizon is defined by dense stands of black spruce and the jagged, weathered granite outcrops that frame the Winnipeg River. This environment, shaped by ancient geological stability, serves as the stage for the Canaqua Pinawa I, held annually each July. For those seeking a mid-summer challenge, this event offers a distinct contrast to the later Canaqua Pinawa II held in August, where the river's character often shifts with the late-summer flow.

Historical currents and landmarks

Swimming here means navigating waters that were once synonymous with the fur trade. Early explorers knew this stretch of the river for the Seven Sisters rapids, a series of seven violent drops that challenged even the most experienced voyageurs. Today, these features lie submerged beneath the reservoir created by the 1931 construction of the Seven Sisters Generating Station. While you won't encounter the original rapids, the presence of the station influences the flow, and swimmers often pass the striking ruins of the 1901 Pinawa Dam. These concrete remains, abandoned in 1951, stand as a sentinel over the channel, providing a visual anchor point during the 3,000m, 6,000m, or 12,000m courses. The area’s history is further layered by the legacy of the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment, which brought a new scientific focus to this granite-bound landscape in the 1960s.

The river environment

Entering the water at Pinawa Beach, you are immediately integrated into a protected ecosystem. The northern bank near Whitemouth Falls is specifically managed as a sanctuary for the great gray owl, and it is not uncommon for the quiet intensity of the swim to be punctuated by the presence of local wildlife along the banks. White-tailed deer are a constant, roaming the shorelines with such frequency that they have defined the town's local identity. While you navigate the river, keep a sharp eye for the diverse fish species beneath you, including northern pike and smallmouth bass. The race structure, organized by Canaqua Sports, accounts for the river's natural conditions, ensuring that all participants, from those tackling the shortest distance to the 12k marathoners, experience the waterway in a controlled and supported setting. Whether you are aiming for a personal best or simply navigating the currents of the Winnipeg River, the event remains a study in navigating a landscape where the boundary between human industry and the wild is consistently blurred.

Where to stay

Pinawa offers a mix of modest local motels and seasonal cottages, many reflecting the town’s origins as a research hub. For a more immersive experience, camping facilities near the beach provide direct access to the water, allowing for an early start on race morning. Prices generally range from $120 to $220 per night, depending on proximity to the riverfront and the level of amenities chosen. During the July event, early booking is recommended as local capacity is limited by the town’s small footprint.

Things to do nearby

The area is best explored by shifting from the water to the trails. Visitors can hike the Pinawa Dam Provincial Park to view the hydro ruins up close or explore the nearby Whiteshell Provincial Park for extensive wilderness trekking. Kayaking and SUP are natural extensions of a swim weekend, allowing for a closer look at the river’s quieter channels. Additionally, the region’s long-standing human history can be observed through guided visits to archaeological sites near the confluence of the Whitemouth and Winnipeg Rivers.
