About the race
The Saar river carries a steady, rhythmic pulse through the heart of Sarreguemines, defined by its strategic convergence with the Blies. Navigating this channel requires reading the water as it shifts from a wider, slower flow into the narrower, more energetic confluence zone that historically dictated the town’s growth. The water here is a dark, mirror-like expanse that reflects the industrial memory of the region, where once the production of delicate faience and snuffboxes defined the local economy. Swimming through this confluence, one is crossing a natural boundary, as the final stretch of the Blies acts as the physical border between France and Germany.
Historical currents and the race
The landscape is marked by the remnants of a medieval fortress, a 10th-century site built specifically to monitor the river junction, which remains a silent sentinel for modern swimmers. The territory itself was first documented in a 706 charter by Fulrad, who served as a key advisor to the Carolingian dynasty and donated this strategic confluence to the Abbey of Echternach. The local connection to the water is deep; Olympic swimmer Aurélie Muller, a native of Sarreguemines, began her journey in these very waters, linking the local river culture to the highest levels of international competition.
The Boucle des Faïenciers, organized by the Cercle Nautique de Sarreguemines, returns for its 9th edition on August 22, 2026. The event utilizes the Esplanade du Casino as the hub for all departures, offering a range of distances including 500m, 1500m, 3000m, and the 5000m marathon, alongside a 4x500m relay. Entry fees are set at 40 EUR, with a 10 EUR surcharge for those registering on-site. The river's character remains manageable, provided one respects the flow at the junction point. Whether choosing the sprint or the full 5km, participants navigate a course that has served as a vital trade artery for over a millennium.
