About the race

The Bangla Channel is a 16.1-kilometre sea swim connecting the western beach of Shahporir Island in Teknaf to the northern shore of Saint Martin. Held annually in January, the event is organized by Shoroj Adventure under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Swimmers depart from Teknaf Dakkhinpara Sea Beach, navigating a course that demands significant endurance and support, as each participant is accompanied by a dedicated boat and rescue personnel to ensure safety throughout the crossing.

The local seascape

As you navigate these waters, you are crossing a path that was once a terrestrial extension of the Teknaf peninsula before being submerged by the Bay of Bengal. Beneath the surface, the seabed consists of a sedimentary rocky reef, frequently mistaken for a coral formation. Your route takes you past the Chhera Dwip landmass, which undergoes a dramatic physical transformation during the tidal cycle; at high tide, this small island is completely severed from the main landmass, causing its surface area to contract from 8 square kilometres to approximately 5 square kilometres. In the distance, you may spot Myanmar military warships patrolling the horizon, a constant presence due to the ongoing territorial tensions surrounding the border.

Historical currents and human endurance

The mouth of the Naf River, which defines the start of your journey, carries a history of conflict dating back to the first Anglo-Burmese War. This region has remained a contested zone for decades, complicating local maritime activity. Despite these geopolitical complexities, the channel has become a focal point for endurance swimming. Lipton Sarkar, known as the 'King of the Bangla Channel', has successfully completed the crossing 20 times. The event continues to grow, with 35 swimmers successfully finishing the 2026 edition. Beyond the physical challenge, the surrounding marine environment is biologically distinct, hosting specialized sponges that contain unique bacterial strains like Bacillus subtilis, which are currently being studied for their potential in developing new antimicrobial peptides.

Where to stay

Accommodations in the Teknaf and Saint Martin area are primarily modest, consisting of local guesthouses and family-run lodges that reflect the island's remote character. Visitors often stay in simple rooms or beach-front cottages that prioritize access to the shoreline over luxury amenities. Prices are typically budget-friendly, ranging from $15 to $40 per night, though availability is strictly limited during the peak tourist season in January. Booking well in advance is essential as infrastructure on the island remains basic.

Things to do nearby

Beyond the swim, the region offers opportunities to explore the unique biodiversity of the Saint Martin coastline, including guided walks to observe the local marine flora. You can engage in small-scale boat trips to navigate the tidal channels around Chhera Dwip or visit local markets in Teknaf to experience regional coastal cuisine. The area is also known for its historical landmarks linked to the colonial era, offering a quiet, rugged landscape for those interested in the maritime history of the Bay of Bengal.
