About the race

The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series is a recurring monthly event held at Hobie Beach in Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay. Starting in October and running through March, the series offers four distinct ocean swim distances: 400m, 1000m, 2000m, and 3000m. Races commence at 9am, bringing a consistent rhythm to the beach front throughout the austral summer. The series operates as a family-friendly sports initiative, often serving as a gateway for those moving toward more complex multi-sport challenges in the region, including the 3-Beaches Swim Challenge which connects the local coastline through a combined swim and run format.

The coastal environment

Swimming here means navigating the western shores of Algoa Bay, a significant maritime gateway where the Indian Ocean meets the Eastern Cape. The water conditions are defined by the open exposure of this vast bay. As you pull through the water, the horizon is dominated by the city’s skyline, where the Donkin Memorial stands as a permanent fixture on the hill, originally placed by the city's founder to overlook the harbour area. The swim takes place alongside one of the city's several Blue Flag beaches, where the management of water quality and coastal safety remains a primary focus for the municipality. The environment is also shaped by the Baakens River, which discharges into the bay nearby, marking the geographical origin of the city's current name. While history notes that prehistoric remains like the Algoasaurus bauri were once linked to the local geological strata, today's swimmers are more likely to focus on the steady swell of the Indian Ocean as they sight the shoreline markers near the memorial site.
