About the race

The 21st edition of El Cruce Cancún–Isla Mujeres takes place on May 16, 2026, offering competitive distances of 1,900m, 3,800m, and a 10,000m full crossing. The 10k event is a specialized open-water challenge that requires participants to meet strict qualification standards—including prior experience in long-distance events or a coach's formal endorsement—to ensure safety during the channel navigation. Swimmers navigate from Playa Caracol toward the island, where the coastal landscape is dominated by the 157-foot Punta Cancún Lighthouse, a navigational reference point that has stood since 1970.

Historical and Underwater Landmarks

As you progress through the Caribbean waters, the route passes near the Yamil Lu'um archaeological site. Here, the Scorpion's Temple once functioned as a pre-Columbian lighthouse, guiding ancient mariners along the coast long before the modern tourism era. Further offshore, the seabed reveals the remnants of the 1988 Hurricane Gilbert; the wrecks of the shrimp boat 'El Triunfador' and the fishing vessel 'Las Redes' now act as artificial reefs. Navigating these waters also means crossing regions known as the 'nest of snakes', a translation of the Mayan name Cancún, which references the island's unique shape. The area is also home to the famous Cave of the Sleeping Sharks, an underwater site brought to international prominence in the 1960s after research by Ramón Bravo and Jacques Cousteau.

Race Logistics and Natural Context

The event draws swimmers seeking a challenge distinct from the shorter Travesía Paalal Ixchel, held earlier in the season. Participants must manage their effort against the Yucatán Current, which maintains high water temperatures throughout the year. The course also traverses sections of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which serves as a vital natural buffer against open-ocean swells. For those seeking a different atmosphere later in the year, the IX Cancun Open Water provides another opportunity to engage with the region's marine environment. Throughout the swim, the coastal waters remain a critical habitat for protected sea turtle species, including the loggerhead and leatherback, which rely on these shores for nesting.
